Welcome to Westchester Medical Center
About our Residency and Fellowship Programs
Westchester Medical Center (WMC), as a regional healthcare referral center, provides high-quality, advanced tertiary and quaternary health services to the people of New York’s Hudson Valley. The Westchester Medical Center has a long-standing record as an academic medical center committed to education and research. Through its academic medical center activities, WMC provides cutting edge care to its patients, while preparing future generations of care givers in an interdisciplinary and interprofessional clinical learning environment.
As an ACGME accredited Sponsoring Institution and in affiliation with New York Medical College as well as WMCHealth System member institutions, our residency and fellowship programs enjoy an integrated clinical and academic education platform that provides health care services for over three million adults and children in the Hudson Valley Region. Westchester Medical Center Specialty and Subspecialty training programs include 495 residents and fellows as well as 555 core clinical faculty who serve as the foundation of our clinical and scholastic enterprise.

In July of 2024, we will have four additional interns as part of the new Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at WMC. All core rotations are located on the Valhalla campus.

A Message from Our Program Director
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College is dedicated to providing exceptional training in Internal Medicine.
We encourage our residents to adopt a critical scientific mindset and commit to reducing health disparities. As a tertiary referral center with a high case mix index, we serve a diverse patient population, offering robust clinical and educational experiences. House staff engage regularly with full-time faculty for mentorship, didactics, and clinical supervision, with all training—including continuity clinic—conducted on-site.
Our picturesque campus, shared with New York Medical College, facilitates integration with medical student education and numerous teaching opportunities. The medical school’s translational research center supports high-quality research collaborations with clinical investigators at Westchester Medical Center.
We also offer a formal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training program led by renowned faculty, ensuring that each team has access to POCUS during rounds. Our hospitalist faculty are all trained in this area.
Fellowships are available in all approved subspecialties, and our residents have a strong track record of securing desired fellowship placements both at the medical center and nationwide. For details on graduate placements, please refer to the “Graduate Fellowship Placement” tab.
Our program is committed to fostering diverse and inclusive environments that support personal and professional growth. We adhere to AAMC best practices for recruitment, emphasizing diversity and inclusion, and we actively collaborate with the Chancellor of Diversity at New York Medical College to ensure equal opportunities for all underrepresented groups. Our wellness initiatives include a variety of diversity and inclusion topics for faculty and trainees. In this supportive and collegial atmosphere, residents will:
Build a strong foundation in general internal medicine while exploring subspecialties.
Provide compassionate care to underserved populations.
Participate in quality improvement and high value care.
One of the most rewarding aspects of our program is the rich diversity our residents bring from various U.S. programs and nine different countries, enhancing our community with unique experiences and perspectives.
We prioritize resident well-being, encouraging connections and support both in and out of the hospital. This camaraderie not only enriches individual experiences but also strengthens our program as a whole.
Enrollment
Criteria for Applicants
Applicants must submit at least three letters of recommendation dated within the current academic year. There is no particular requirement for which type of faculty/supervisors write your letters. We prefer that they are written by faculty who are the most familiar with applicants.
While we prefer candidates not more than five years out of medical school, an applicant involved in a post-graduate clinical environment will be considered.
USMLE or COMLEX Steps 1 and 2 must be passed in order to be considered (step 2 results can be pending at the time of interview but must have a passing score in order to be ranked).
We do not have a firm cut off on USMLE or other exam scores. We review all applicants from a holistic standpoint, considering their overall diversity, skills, and experience.
Interview Schedule & Criteria
We will notify applicants through Thalamus as to whether they have been selected for an interview. Applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), which can be accessed using at https://apps.aamc.org/myeras. Applications may be submitted starting September 3, 2025, and Internal medicine residency programs may begin reviewing applications in ERAS on September 24, 2025.
Our residency interviews for the 2025-2026 application cycle will be held virtually.
Our program will begin our first round of invitations in early October. Interviews will take place October 20 through December 18. Candidates will be provided with detailed information regarding the logistics of the interview days.
Visa Sponsorship
Passage of USMLE Step 3 is strongly encouraged for all applicants applying from abroad.
Westchester Medical Center will accept individuals on J1 Visas sponsored by the ECGMG/Intealth.
More information about the residency program is available on our Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA) listing.
Program Signaling
While we preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we also consider applicants who do not signal us.
